Why is converting to L/100km so confusing?
Most systems measure 'distance per volume' (how far you can go on one tank). L/100km measures 'volume per distance' (how much fuel you burn over a set distance). This means the math is inverted.

An Imperial (UK) gallon is roughly 20% larger than a US gallon, meaning a car gets 'higher' mpg in the UK mathematically, even if efficiency is the same.
It is calculated by dividing the liters of fuel used by the kilometers traveled, and then multiplying the result by 100.
Generally, anything below 8 L/100km (or above 30 mpg) is considered highly fuel-efficient for a standard non-hybrid gasoline car.
